Aslan star Christy Dignam winning cancer battle
DOCS have told Aslan frontman Christy Dignam that his rare blood cancer has been stemmed for the moment — but he is still taking one day at a time.
The 53-year-old Crazy World singer got the good news this week after London specialists examined hi-tech medical scans of how his body has responded to treatment and medication since he was
diagnosed with the disease almost a year ago.
Christy’s wife Kathryn (52) told The Star: “We’ve been told by our London consultant that the proteins causing the cancer have stopped reproducing for the moment — so that’s very good news.
“But we can’t get our hopes up too high and Christy’s blood will be examined regularly to see if there is any change in the situation.
“In the meantime he has to build up his system by doing regular intensive rehab in Beaumont Hospital on his heart and other vital organs — so it’s one day at a time and we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.”
Kathryn added: “So it’s a very positive start to the New Year for us. And we want to thank the fans everywhere whose thoughts and prayers have helped us on our journey.”
A big focus for Christy and his wife is the forthcoming birth of their grandson in March when pregnant daughter, singer Kiera (27) is due.
Recovery
Meanwhile, Aslan band members responded to Christy’s good news by revealing yesterday that the frontman’s recovery may see a long-awaited comeback gig later this year.
A statement said: “Christy has returned from the UK with the good news that his treatment is working well and he is now on the mend.

“There is still a long way to go with the recovery process, BUT, this good news has really given us all the best possible start to 2014.
“With such promising news, we hope this means that we will see you all stage side later on this year!”
Crooner Christy was diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer in March last year after he was routinely admitted to hospital after suffering chest pains.
He later dramatically left his sick bed and course of chemotherapy to walk singer Kiera up the aisle at her wedding to childhood sweetheart Darren at the end of June.
A week earlier, a star-studded fundraiser, which included U2 performing Aslan hit This Is live from New York, helped raised e40,000 for specialist cancer treatment.
Kathryn also said that she and Christy felt very lucky that the singer’s body has responded well to the chemotherapy he underwent in recent months.
She said: “We are very conscious of how fortunate we are because we have met many people in hospitals who are in a different boat.
Obstacles
“We’re thankful for these small mercies because we’re mindful that there could be other obstacles around the corner in terms of Christy’s health.”
Christy, who marked 30 years married to Kathryn last year, made a plea in the past to people to get themselves checked out by their GPs if they are not feeling well.
Loving wife Kathryn beat cervical cancer in the 1980s and has temporarily given up her job as a hair salon boss to be a constant support at her husband’s side in his tough struggle to restore his health.
Speculation is rife that Aslan could sell out the massive O2 arena for the first time in their history for the expected comeback gig sometime this year. SOURCE: thestar.ie
